New Year Greetings to All Members,

The fall Membership Lunch at the Clubhouse was a well-attended gathering of 22 members
with a full agenda of sailing, membership and environmental updates.

Following introductions, the first order of business was presenting the upcoming calendar for club activities
including a gathering in February, Clean Up Day March 10 and a departure gathering in April.

Vice Commodore Captain Charlie announced that our Member Claudia Padilla Moran,
the head of “Clean Up Baja California Sur” asked if our members would attend their upcoming
fundraiser “Tide and Trash Film Festival” on December 6th. More to be told on this later in the log.

Captain Charlie announced that our fleet Yacht, the Catalina 22, was available for members and their guests to take
a harbor wine tour for a donation that would go to support scholarships at the UpWind Sailing School.
This would be 4 guests for a pre sunset motor cruise to be arranged by appointment.
The next order of Business was the induction of new members by Membership Chair Freddy Johnson.
James Matheson, Peggy, and Jamie passed the entry test and received their membership cards. Visiting club members
from San Diego, Bob and Jen were also recognized. It was noted that we now have our 50th card carrying members.
A great lunch was enjoyed by all, and thanks were given to our food and beverage provider at the Drunken Sailor
Adrian Diaz, our Club photographer David Walker and to our Commodore Roberto Gorostiza
who was unable to attend this luncheon.

And the Award Goes to . . .

Our special guest that day was Pete Horner, the General Manager of the Marine Group Boatyard here at the Puerto Los Cabos Marina. For the support he and his company have given to the UpWind Sailing School, our club gave him a certificate of appreciation and an Honorary Membership to our Yacht Club. He received his hat and membership card and with his 1000-ton Coast Guard License, we waived our mandatory membership admittance test.

The next presentation was a sailing trophy gift of thanks and recognition to our Membership Chair Freddy Cook Johnson.
It was his generous donation that began the Freddy Johnson Scholarship Fund for young students that could not afford
the class tuition. For his continued support of our Club, he received a stainless-steel-modeled sailboat engraved
with his name along with our Yacht Club name and burgee.

Original Club de Yates founders Hold Reunion

Recently, the original charter members of Club de Yates Yacht Club, A.C. held a gathering in Cabo San Lucas to celebrate their founding of the Club in 2007. Our Vice Commodore Captain Charlie was in attendance and the meeting was moderated by our current Commodore Roberto Gorostiza. They were all delighted to know that the Club has now grown to over 50 members, has its own website and is active in the Sailing School and Cleanup of the local environment. A great time of sailing tales and yarns accompanied great food with just a little wine and cerveza.

Burgee Exchange

Burgee Exchange Between Club de Yates Los Cabos and Richmond Yacht Club, California
Our experienced sailing members Janet Tompkins and Stan Rinne purchased and presented our official Burgee to their Richmond Yacht Club on the East side of the San Francisco Bay. As is the custom, they have presented the Richmond Yacht Club Burgee to us, and it will now fly in our Clubhouse in Puerto Los Cabos. Janet has numerous Transpacific races to Hawaii in her credits and Stan has his own sailing history racing many years in offshore competition outside and inside the San Francisco Bay. We hope to make available some of Janet's writings of her travels available to our members.

Meet A Member

Soon to be added to our Club Website is a “Meet A Member” feature with a biography of one of our members with a short story of them on and off the water experiences. On this occasion, we introduce Fred and Ursula Ahrens from their home port in Nanaimo, Canada. This dynamic duo sails their Beneteau Oceanic 461 (yes, that would be 46 feet in length) by themselves in the pristine sailing grounds north and south of Vancouver Island. As if sailing their 46-foot yacht and having a Condominium here in San Jose del Cabo at The Peninsula were not enough, they are now working on the completion of a new home they have built on Vancouver Island. If you know Fred, he does not stay neutral very long and prefers a project to idle relaxation. They have shared the photos below to give us all a sense of their adventures and we look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words and you will believe it after you check out Ursula’s photos on her site at this
address and see the beautiful cruising grounds they enjoy in the Northwest.

In the Spring of 2023, Club de Yates secured an official home at the spectacular Puerto Los Cabos Marina just East of Old Town San Jose del Cabo in La Playa. Locally known as “The Drunken Sailor Restaurant”, proprietor Adrian Ruz-Diaz has permitted us to call his dockside palapa home for our members. The location is walking distance from the marina guest dock and our UpWind Sailing School and provides fine food and space for member fellowship and meetings. Contact information, reviews and direction are available online.
